The gaming world is reeling after the sudden death of Vince Zampella, co-creator of the blockbuster Call of Duty franchise, who died in a car accident north of Los Angeles on Sunday. He was 55.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Zampella was driving a Ferrari on a scenic stretch of road when the vehicle left the roadway, collided with a concrete barrier, and caught fire. Both Zampella and a passenger were ejected from the car and later died from their injuries. Witnesses shared footage online showing the car engulfed in flames on the mountain road. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash.

Zampella was a pioneering figure in the gaming industry, known for shaping the first-person military shooter genre. He co-founded Infinity Ward in 2002 and helped launch the first Call of Duty in 2003, a franchise that now attracts over 100 million active players each month. Later, he founded Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind Titanfall, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi games.

Throughout his decades-long career, Zampella’s work helped define modern gaming, leaving a lasting influence on players and developers alike. Gaming giant Electronic Arts confirmed his death on Monday, expressing condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues.
