UK-based Nigerian super heavyweight boxer, Odera Okwuosa, has returned to Nigeria for the festive season and is already raving about his experience, describing it as unlike anything he has encountered abroad.

Okwuosa, who has built a reputation through his sporting achievements overseas, has been immersing himself in the vibrant celebrations of Detty December—a period marked by music, cultural displays, and high-energy festivities that attract Nigerians both at home and from the diaspora.

Reflecting on his first two days in the country, Okwuosa expressed amazement at the energy and atmosphere of the streets. “I have arrived back in Nigeria, Detty December day 2. If I tell you the time I have had I will be in big big trouble, this is not a real place,” he said, highlighting the unique liveliness of the festive season.

Comparing life in Nigeria with his experiences in London, Okwuosa praised the warmth, hospitality, and vibrancy of his home country. “People that think London is where it is at, Nigeria has everything you need. People greet me like I am king. The girls here are beautiful. If you have money, I promised, you will have the time of your life,” he said.

The festive experience has prompted the boxer to reconsider his long-term plans. “I am thinking to myself, this is where I need to live permanently. Forget about UK, Nigeria has everything you want. Detty December owes me nothing. I could go back to London, I will be a happy man today,” Okwuosa added, underscoring the strong pull of home during the holiday season.

Okwuosa’s comments reflect a growing sentiment among Nigerians abroad who return home during the holidays to experience the unique cultural celebrations that define the festive period. For many, Detty December offers a reminder of the vibrancy, warmth, and opportunities available in Nigeria, blending tradition, entertainment, and modern urban life.
