The contraction highlights the broader economic challenges in China, where a prolonged property crisis and ongoing trade tensions with the United States have cooled consumer activity. With spending subdued, companies have trimmed marketing budgets—an especially sharp blow for Baidu, whose core search platform relies heavily on advertising dollars. Revenue from online ads dropped 18% year-over-year to 15.3 billion yuan, deepening the strain on the company’s legacy business.
Yet Baidu’s efforts to reposition itself as a leader in artificial intelligence are showing signs of traction. AI cloud revenue climbed 21% to 6.2 billion yuan, buoyed by demand from businesses experimenting with large language models and AI agents. CEO Robin Li emphasized that the AI cloud operation has become a key pillar of Baidu’s next phase of growth and a critical counterbalance to volatility in advertising cycles.
The quarter also included a significant setback: an 11 billion-yuan net loss, driven largely by asset write-downs. Still, executives struck an optimistic tone about long-term prospects tied to AI technologies. Baidu continues to integrate generative AI features into its search products, aiming to anchor itself as China’s leading AI-powered search platform. The company also faces intensifying competition from rivals such as Alibaba and DeepSeek, both expanding their own AI offerings.
Despite the competitive landscape and near-term economic headwinds, Baidu reiterated its commitment to sustained investment in artificial intelligence—while pledging to maintain financial discipline. Since launching its first chatbot service in early 2023, the company has directed more than 100 billion yuan toward AI development. Executives framed this investment as essential to positioning Baidu for future growth, even if the benefits may take time to materialize.
As China’s tech sector reshapes itself around AI capabilities, Baidu’s latest results underline both the risks of its traditional advertising model and the growing promise of its AI-cloud ambitions.
