Irish actress Nicola Coughlan, best known for her role as Penelope in Netflix’s Bridgerton, has addressed public commentary about her body, making it clear that she does not aim to promote body positivity.

Speaking with Elle, the 39-year-old actress explained that she never focused on actors’ weights growing up and does not consider discussions of her own body or weight loss a personal priority. “The thing I say sometimes that pisses people off is, ‘I have no interest in body positivity,’” Coughlan said. “When I was a kid growing up, I never thought about that. I didn’t look at actors and think about their bodies. So, I actually don’t care. There’s a lot of things I’m passionate about; it’s not one of them. That’s someone else’s thing. It’s not mine.”

Coughlan recounted an experience while filming Bridgerton, noting that despite exercising and losing weight to fit into costume, public perception still fixated on her size. “I had lost a bunch of weight—I was probably a size 10 and one of the corsets was a size 8. And then people talked about how I was plus-size, and I was like, ‘How f–ked are we that I am the biggest woman you want to see on screen?’” she said.

The actress’s candid comments highlight her desire to focus on her craft and passions rather than public scrutiny over body image, challenging societal pressures placed on women in entertainment.
