The Brazil international, who joined United from Real Madrid in 2022 for a reported $60 million, leaves having won the FA Cup and the English League Cup during his time in Manchester. The 33-year-old has made 146 appearances for the club and scored 21 goals.
In a statement, Casemiro paid tribute to the club and its supporters, saying:
“I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life. From the first day that I walked out at this beautiful stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford and the love that I now share with our supporters for this special club.”
A mixed spell at Old Trafford
Casemiro arrived at United as one of the world’s most decorated midfielders, having won three La Liga titles and five Champions League trophies with Real Madrid. However, he struggled to consistently replicate the levels of performance that made him a standout at the Spanish giants.
Despite this, he played a pivotal role in United’s 2023 League Cup final win over Newcastle, scoring in the victory.
What’s next?
Casemiro did not reveal his next destination and will become a free agent when the season ends.
“It is not time to say goodbye; there are many more memories to create during the next four months,” he said. “We still have a lot to fight for together; my complete focus will, as always, remain on giving my everything to help our club to succeed.”
United’s season amid uncertainty
Manchester United currently sit fifth in the Premier League table and are still pushing for qualification to next season’s Champions League. Casemiro’s exit comes during a period of upheaval at the club, following the recent dismissal of head coach Ruben Amorim.
Amorim became the second manager to be sacked during Casemiro’s tenure at Old Trafford. Former United player Michael Carrick has since been appointed interim head coach until the end of the season.
