In a significant recognition of leadership and service, Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, has announced that Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, and former Ogun State Governor and elder statesman Chief Olusegun Osoba will be honoured with Doctor of Science (D.Sc., Honoris Causa) degrees during the institution’s 17th convocation ceremony scheduled for January 29.

The university’s management confirmed the development in a statement released by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Dapo Oke.

The statement highlighted the trio as “exceptional individuals” whose remarkable contributions to their fields and society at large make them deserving recipients of the honorary degrees.

Recognising Excellence and Impact

TASFUED’s management stated that it felt privileged to honour these individuals, whose achievements serve as inspiration to many. The institution emphasised that the honorary degrees underscore their exceptional contributions while reinforcing the university’s commitment to excellence.

Governor Abiodun: Transformative Leadership and Educational Progress

The university highlighted Governor Abiodun’s successful political and entrepreneurial background, noting his tenure as governor since 2019 and his re-election in 2023. It also referenced his experience as former Chairman of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

TASFUED described Abiodun’s administration as being driven by the “ISEYA” agenda, which prioritises Infrastructure, Social Welfare, Education, Youth Development, Agriculture, and Governance. This agenda has delivered major projects such as the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport, affordable housing initiatives, and strengthened public systems.

The statement further noted that Governor Abiodun has elevated Ogun State’s status as a leading industrial and investment destination through his leadership.

His accolades, including Governor of the Year awards from Independent and The Sun newspapers in 2023, the Silverbird Man of the Year award, and recent 2025 recognitions for Digital Transformation and Enterprise & Investment Promotion, were cited as evidence of his impact.

The university also praised his contributions to education and humanitarian efforts, noting that his administration initiated the transition process that turned the institution into a federal university—a transformation seen as pivotal for education in Ogun State.

Governor Abiodun is set to receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc. Ed.) Honoris Causa in Education Management.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu: Advocacy for Women and Children

Senator Oluremi Tinubu was described as a philanthropist dedicated to supporting women and the girl-child through her New Era Foundation, which focuses on youth development, environmental health, women’s health, and education.

The statement also highlighted her 12-year tenure as senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District (2011–2023), during which she served on the Health and Women’s Affairs Committees, championing causes related to education, healthcare access, and community service.

As First Lady, she continues to advocate for women’s rights and youth empowerment.

She will be awarded Doctor of Science (D.Sc. Ed.) Honoris Causa in Childhood Education.

Chief Olusegun Osoba: A Legacy of Journalism and Democratic Leadership

TASFUED described Chief Olusegun Osoba as a “distinguished media icon, statesman, and administrator of uncommon clarity of purpose,” noting his long-standing influence in Nigeria’s political and civic life.

Osoba served twice as Executive Governor of Ogun State, during both the Third and Fourth Republics, and his administration was marked by rural and urban development, infrastructural renewal, community empowerment, and compassionate governance.

The university also noted his role in Nigeria’s democratic struggle, contributing to the restoration of civilian rule.

Osoba is to be honoured with Doctor of Science (D.Sc. Ed.) Honoris Causa in Political Science.

A Lasting Legacy

TASFUED further acknowledged that the university’s history would be incomplete without recognizing Chief Osoba’s role in initiating the transformation of the old College of Education into what is now the Tai Solarin University of Education—through the signing into law of the bill that made the college a degree-awarding institution in affiliation with the University of Ibadan.

The honorary degrees, the university said, are a tribute to the enduring legacies of these leaders and their contributions to education, governance, and national development.
