The new integration allows Nigerian users to link their PayPal accounts directly to their Paga digital wallets, making it possible to receive payments from PayPal-supported markets globally and withdraw the proceeds locally in naira. Users can also spend the funds on everyday needs, including bill payments, bank transfers, online purchases, and transactions via Paga’s Visa card.
The development represents a major boost for freelancers, online entrepreneurs, and small businesses that have long faced limitations in accessing PayPal services directly. It also opens up new opportunities for Nigerian merchants to sell to customers across PayPal’s global network of more than 400 million users.
Announced on Tuesday by both companies, the collaboration highlights a shared focus on expanding financial inclusion and strengthening cross-border commerce in Nigeria’s fast-growing digital payments ecosystem.
Speaking on the launch, Paga’s founder and Group Chief Executive Officer, Tayo Oviosu, said the integration was designed to make global earnings more accessible to Nigerians. He noted that the partnership would benefit freelancers, online businesses, and consumers by allowing them to easily receive, use, and manage international funds within the local economy.
Similarly, PayPal’s Senior Vice President, Regional Head and General Manager for the Middle East and Africa, Otto Williams, said the company had been deliberate in working with local innovators to develop solutions tailored to Nigeria’s market. According to him, the partnership would help strengthen the payments ecosystem by supporting local innovation, expanding financial inclusion, and enabling more Nigerians to participate confidently in the digital economy.
Nigeria’s digital payments sector has been expanding rapidly. Transaction values reached N657.8 trillion in 2023, while the country now boasts more than 30 million active mobile wallet users, according to a 2024 report by Novatia Consulting. With over 21 million users and a robust API-driven infrastructure, Paga is positioned to scale PayPal’s services nationwide through its established settlement network.
To access the service, users are required to log into the Paga app or website, link their PayPal account, and begin receiving international payments directly into their Paga wallet. Funds can then be transferred locally, used for bill payments, spent online, or withdrawn as needed.
Industry watchers say the partnership marks an important milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s financial infrastructure, easing access to global income streams, and empowering small businesses and individuals to participate more actively in the global digital economy.
