A tragic accident has claimed the life of special effects artist James Akaie during a film production in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The incident occurred as the film crew was nearing the end of filming. A statement issued on Friday by the film’s producer and director, James Abinibi, confirmed that Akaie, a Special Effects and Pyrotechnics Artist, died following an unexpected explosion in a designated effects preparation area outside the main set.

“It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that we confirm a tragic accident occurred on location in Abeokuta as filming was coming to a wrap, resulting in the death of our esteemed colleague and friend, James Akaie,” Abinibi said.

Akaie was rushed to a hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. Two of his assistants also sustained burn injuries and were immediately taken to a specialist hospital for treatment. They have since been confirmed stable and continue to receive medical care.

The production team has launched an internal review, while relevant authorities have begun a thorough investigation into the cause of the explosion. Abinibi stated that the team is fully cooperating with the authorities and will release more details only after considering the victim’s family and the ongoing investigation.

“We will remember him not only for his exceptional skill but for the vibrant presence he brought to our set every day,” the producer added.

He also appealed for privacy for Akaie’s family and the crew as they grieve the loss.

The film industry in Nigeria has previously faced similar tragedies, and this incident is a stark reminder of the risks involved in special effects and pyrotechnics work on set. The investigation will aim to determine what led to the explosion and how such accidents can be prevented in the future.
