Zootropolis 2 has surged to the top of Hollywood’s animated box office charts, earning $1.7bn globally and surpassing Inside Out 2 to become the highest-grossing Hollywood animated film of all time.

The sequel, released in November with an estimated production budget of $150m, has now claimed the ninth spot on the list of highest-grossing films worldwide—behind blockbuster franchises such as Avatar, Titanic, and Avengers: Endgame.

A New Record for Hollywood Animation

Zootropolis 2 overtook Inside Out 2, which earned $1.69bn after its 2024 release. The film’s strong performance was boosted by its Thanksgiving release in the US, which delivered the biggest opening weekend ever for an animated film.

It also became the fastest Hollywood animated film to reach the $1bn mark globally.

Still Behind China’s Ne Zha 2

Despite its Hollywood record, Zootropolis 2 remains behind China’s Ne Zha 2, which grossed $2.2bn last year—making it the highest-grossing animated film overall.

Plot and Cast

The sequel follows Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin), the determined rabbit police officer, who reunites with con artist fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman). Together, they pursue a mysterious new character, Gary De'Snake (Ke Huy Quan), a reptilian resident stirring trouble in Zootropolis.

Disney Reacts

Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman praised the film’s global audience, saying:

“This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible… Zootopia 2 is an extraordinary achievement.”
