Former Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is reportedly on the verge of choosing Austria over Nigeria for his international career, according to a report by The Athletic.

The 22-year-old is eligible to represent Nigeria, through his parents, and Austria, where he was born. While he has played for England at youth level—up to the Under-20s—he has yet to feature for the senior national team.

That has left the former England youth international open to a nationality switch under FIFA rules, which allow players to change allegiance before making a senior competitive appearance.

Now, the Austrian Football Association is said to be working towards an agreement that would secure Chukwuemeka’s commitment ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The midfielder, who currently stars for Borussia Dortmund, would represent Austria at senior level if the switch is finalised, ending any chance of him joining Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
