The draw sets up one of the standout fixtures of the knockout stage, with the Premier League side facing a daunting test against the French giants. Having finished sixth in the league phase, Chelsea avoided the play-offs but were always likely to encounter elite opposition in the first knockout round.
The first leg will be played at the Parc des Princes on March 11 at 8pm, before the decisive return fixture takes place under the lights at Stamford Bridge on March 17 at 8pm. The two-legged tie is expected to deliver tactical intrigue and high drama as both clubs pursue continental glory.
PSG head coach Luis Enrique has already acknowledged the scale of the challenge ahead. Speaking after his side edged AS Monaco FC in a 5-4 thriller, the Spaniard admitted there are aspects his team must improve before facing top-tier opposition.
“Emotionally, Barca is a very special team for me,” Enrique said, reflecting on potential opponents before the draw. “Whether it’s Camp Nou or Chelsea, none is easy. I will adapt to whatever comes. Both Barcelona and Chelsea are incredible teams.
“If we have to go to London to play against Chelsea, we know we have to fix a couple of things.”
With PSG aiming to defend their crown and Chelsea seeking to reassert themselves among Europe’s elite, the tie promises to be one of the defining contests of the Round of 16.
