Chukwuemeka qualifies for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian parents, while his birth in Austria makes him eligible for the European nation. The 22-year-old has also represented England at youth level, featuring up to the Under-20 side, but has yet to make a senior appearance for the Three Lions.
According to The Athletic, the Austrian Football Association is actively pursuing an agreement that would see the Borussia Dortmund midfielder represent Austria at senior level ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Under FIFA eligibility rules, Chukwuemeka remains free to switch allegiance since he has not been capped competitively by England’s senior team. His decision could therefore reshape his international pathway at a crucial stage of his career.
The development would represent a setback for Nigeria, who have in recent years sought to attract dual-nationality players to strengthen the Super Eagles squad. Austria, meanwhile, appear keen to secure the services of the highly rated midfielder as they build toward the next World Cup cycle.
An official confirmation is yet to be announced, but talks are said to be progressing as Austria push to finalise the switch.
