The accident, which occurred on 29 December near Lagos, claimed the lives of Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength coach, Sina Ghami. The vehicle they were traveling in collided with a stationary lorry on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Joshua, 36, sustained injuries in the crash and received treatment at a local hospital before being discharged two days later.
The driver, 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been formally charged with multiple offences, including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s licence.
Kayode made his latest court appearance on Wednesday at Sagamu Magistrates Court in Ogun State, near Lagos. During proceedings, prosecutors requested additional time to prepare their evidence, leading the court to adjourn the case until 13 March. This marks Kayode’s second appearance; he is yet to enter a plea.
The crash has drawn widespread attention, not only due to the involvement of a high-profile athlete but also because of the tragic loss of Joshua’s close team members, underscoring concerns over road safety on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.
