Communication with a close friend, the agency said, helped verify her wellbeing following the public outcry that trailed her online testimony. The DSVGA also expressed appreciation to members of the public who shared timely information through social media channels, noting that such engagement played a role in enabling swift intervention.
However, the agency clarified that the incident did not occur within Lagos State. Preliminary findings indicate that the assault took place in neighbouring Ogun State, placing the matter outside Lagos’ legal jurisdiction.
“In the spirit of inter-agency collaboration and survivor protection, all relevant information has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities in Ogun State,” the statement said.
The Ogun State Police Command has now assumed responsibility for the investigation. According to the DSVGA, efforts are ongoing to ensure the survivor’s full cooperation with law enforcement to enable a comprehensive inquiry and adherence to due process.
Mirabel’s initial account described a harrowing encounter in which she reportedly opened her door late at night after mistaking a knock for that of a neighbour. She later recounted being assaulted after a physical struggle with the intruder, leaving her deeply traumatised. Her disclosure also highlighted personal struggles with sleep and substance use, details that added to the emotional weight of her testimony and intensified public reaction online.
Reaffirming its position, the Lagos agency reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance policy toward domestic and sexual violence. It stressed that every survivor deserves protection, care, support, and access to justice. Authorities further encouraged individuals with credible information to come forward and assist investigators, while maintaining strict respect for the survivor’s confidentiality.
The case has drawn renewed attention to the importance of cross-border coordination between state agencies in addressing gender-based violence, particularly when incidents span different jurisdictions.
