Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has appointed Oba Olufolarin Olukayode Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara, as the sixth chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), following the completion of Prof. Gbolahan Elias, SAN’s tenure as the university’s fifth chancellor.

The announcement was made on Sunday by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mr. Emmanuel Fanu, who confirmed that the appointment is in line with the provisions of the LASU Law 2004 (as amended), Chapter L69, Volume 7, Schedule 1, which grants the Visitor of the university—the governor—the authority to appoint its chancellor.

The appointment is for a single term of five years, effective from Friday, 13th February 2026, and is renewable once.

University officials, including Vice Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, have congratulated Oba Ogunsanwo on his new role, expressing confidence in his ability to provide impactful leadership and advance the vision and mission of LASU.

The state government and the entire university community also expressed gratitude to Prof. Elias for his dedicated service and the dignity with which he represented LASU throughout his tenure.

Oba Ogunsanwo’s appointment marks a new chapter for the university, with expectations that his leadership will further strengthen its academic and cultural standing both nationally and internationally.
