Elijah Wood Says He Wouldn’t Want Another Actor Playing Frodo as New “Lord of the Rings” Film Gains Momentum

Speculation surrounding a new installment in the Middle-earth saga continues to grow as plans for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, expected to reach cinemas in 2027, gather attention among fans and industry watchers alike. The project aims to further explore the mythology created by J. R. R. Tolkien, revisiting events set between key moments of the original trilogy.

Amid the growing anticipation, Elijah Wood, who famously portrayed Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has shared his thoughts about the possibility of another actor stepping into the iconic role. Speaking in a recent interview with The Sunday Times, Wood said he would prefer that the character remain closely tied to his original portrayal.

“I certainly wouldn’t want anybody else to play Frodo as long as I’m alive and able,” Wood said.

While the actor did not confirm whether he will reprise the role in the upcoming film, his remarks suggest a strong personal attachment to the character that helped define his career. The comments also come as discussions continue within Hollywood about revisiting familiar figures from Middle-earth for the new project.

The renewed interest in the franchise has sparked several unverified casting rumours. Among them are reports that Leo Woodall could potentially take over the role of Aragorn, originally played by Viggo Mortensen, though no official confirmation has been issued.

Wood hinted that developments around the film may already be further along than publicly acknowledged. He noted that Ian McKellen, who portrayed Gandalf, may have unintentionally revealed details about the project during a fan convention last August.

“It hasn’t been officially announced, but at a convention last August, Ian let the cat out of the bag. So there is a good chance,” Wood said.

He added that although discussions about returning to Middle-earth can make fans protective of the franchise, the prospect of another film also carries excitement.

“I’m not able to officially say anything until it’s announced, but I will say I’m thrilled with the prospect of another film. It’s always a little nerve-racking when people talk about new movies for a world like Middle-earth. Everyone gets a little protective and hopes it retains its level of integrity, but this story is fun, thrilling. There is a genuine feeling of getting the band back together.”

According to screenwriter Philippa Boyens, the story of The Hunt for Gollum will explore events that take place between **Bilbo Baggins’ birthday celebration and the journey through the Mines of Moria—both of which occur during the timeline of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Despite the growing excitement around the project, it remains unclear whether Wood will return as Frodo. For now, fans continue to watch developments closely as production plans for the next chapter in the Middle-earth saga gradually unfold.
