Growing up in a tea-farming village in Kenya, Valentine Muriuki, inspired by her accountant father, envisioned a traditional career in finance. However, the rapidly evolving job market often demands agility over tradition. After taking an accidental leap from sales to Salesforce with technology training provider ALX, Valentine is now a remote technical specialist working with major United States clients, demonstrating the impact of accessible, world-class technology training.

Equipped with a Bachelor of Finance, Valentine faced a common obstacle for many African graduates: a lack of the experience companies demanded. She pivoted to a sales role for four years to generate an income. Recognising the tech industry's scalability, she aimed to transition into software sales and enrolled in the ALX Salesforce programme.

What she initially believed was a sales training course was soon revealed to be an intensive technical programme. Noticing many of her fellow students were also from non-technical backgrounds, Valentine embraced the challenge. The foundational modules introduced her to cloud computing and database management, proving that technical proficiency is highly attainable for those without a traditional computer science background.

"Start where you are, with what you have," says Valentine. "When I looked at my own background, I realised my skills in sales and communication could be stepping stones, even in technology. All you need is the willingness to learn and adapt—your current strengths can open unexpected doors."

"I used to think not having a computer science degree was a barrier, but ALX proved that anyone with determination can break into this world," she continues. "The foundation courses gave me the basics, and the belief that I belong in tech too."

Bridging the Gap: The ALX Education Ecosystem

Treating her studies like a full-time job, Valentine visited the ALX hub daily to access reliable internet, professional infrastructure, and a community of ambitious peers. This highly supportive environment is part of ALX’s strategy to tackle the global tech talent shortage.

The results of this robust ecosystem are undeniable. Currently, 62% of ALX learners find gainful employment within six months of completing their training. With over 347,100 graduates and 257,900 youth actively in work, ALX is delivering scalable, high-impact economic transformation across the continent. Crucially, ALX is driving inclusivity in the tech sector. Women represent a remarkable 55% of all graduates, totalling 191,925 highly skilled female professionals. ALX has empowered 17,950 female entrepreneurs, actively dismantling barriers to entry in the digital economy.

Proof multiplies

Guided by ALX, Valentine proactively offered her new skills to a Texas-based non-profit she connected with on Reddit. This strategic move provided her with crucial hands-on experience in data migration and system administration. The confidence gained from this project quickly translated into a full-time role with a company servicing large US clients.

When her employers required additional Salesforce resources, she confidently recommended her ALX peers. Today, she works alongside some of the colleagues she studied with, proving that empowered women build empowered communities. "My journey hasn’t just been about finding my place, but also making space for others. The pie is big enough for all of us. Lifting others as we rise creates a ripple effect, and that’s the real success."

Nimie Chaylone, General Manager at ALX Kigali and Nairobi, says, “So much more than e-learning and skills training, ALX is a movement that empowers women like Valentine to thrive, lead, and champion others. We’re building a collaborative ecosystem where every success story inspires new possibilities, and where women have the tools, the confidence, and the community to drive Africa’s digital future.”

Valentine's remarkable journey from local sales to global tech illustrates how the right education ecosystem can bridge the gap between African talent and international employment. By developing new technical skills and showing resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn, Valentine has transformed her career and opened doors for her peers.
