Content creator and philanthropist Mitchell Mukoro, widely known as King Mitchy, has issued a public apology following widespread criticism over her recent online conduct, including a viral live video in which she appeared to ingest a substance.
The apology comes after days of controversy that drew reactions across social media and involved prominent figures such as Seyi Tinubu, activist VeryDarkMan, and the traditional ruler Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife.
In a video message shared online, King Mitchy acknowledged that her behaviour was inappropriate and said she was ready to be held accountable for her actions, admitting that she had disappointed many people, particularly young girls who regard her as a role model.
She specifically apologised for consuming a substance during a live broadcast, describing the act as irresponsible.
“Good morning Nigerians. I’m ready to be held accountable for my actions,” she said, noting that she had spent several days reflecting on the incident. “For the substance I took on live video, that was very wrong of me because there are young girls that are looking up to be me one day.”
The content creator also extended a public apology to Seyi Tinubu, the son of Nigeria’s president Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying although she had previously apologised privately, the nature of the incident required a public apology.
“I apologised privately, but I did not disrespect you privately, I disrespected you publicly, so I want to apologise publicly,” she said, expressing gratitude for his support.
In the emotional video, King Mitchy also apologised to the Ooni of Ife, kneeling while expressing regret for mentioning the monarch in the controversy.
She further addressed activist VeryDarkMan, whom she referred to as her “brother,” saying she now better understood his advocacy.
“You’re fighting for Nigerians and we can make Nigeria a better place. I’m sorry for coming at you like that,” she said, adding that his cause deserved more supporters rather than critics.
Background to the Controversy
The dispute began in late February when King Mitchy announced plans to renovate a dilapidated school within six days, a project that quickly attracted public attention.
The initiative later sparked a public disagreement with VeryDarkMan, who alleged that the project was being used to improve the image of the current administration.
Tensions escalated further after King Mitchy posted what she described as a private conversation with the Ooni of Ife, a move that many critics interpreted as disrespectful to the monarch.
Amid the backlash, King Mitchy claimed that sustained online harassment led to the loss of her business Instagram account.
The situation intensified when she appeared in a distressed state during a live video, seemingly ingesting a substance believed by viewers to be bleach despite attempts by those watching to intervene.
In the aftermath, her management team briefly announced her death in a statement posted on her Instagram page before retracting it, later clarifying that she was alive and receiving care.
Tinubu Responds
Reacting to the allegations, Seyi Tinubu dismissed claims that he was financing King Mitchy’s activities or involved in the online feud.
He explained that he had only met the content creator once in a public setting and had provided financial support toward her non-governmental organisation’s activities, as he had done for several youth-led initiatives.
“I met Mitchy once, in a public setting, alongside others,” he wrote, adding that a follow-up meeting to review the impact of her NGO’s work did not take place due to his illness.
VeryDarkMan had earlier alleged that Seyi Tinubu was funding King Mitchy’s projects and had threatened his life—claims Tinubu has strongly denied.
