In a major step toward enhancing digital payment security and privacy, Mastercard has partnered with Prime Bank PLC to introduce Bangladesh’s first numberless debit card through the bank’s digital platform, Prime NOW. The card was officially unveiled yesterday in Dhaka by Tanjil Chowdhury, chairman of Prime Bank, and Syed Mohammad Kamal, Mastercard’s country manager for Bangladesh.

Unlike traditional debit cards, the Prime NOW Mastercard debit card omits printed card numbers, CVV codes, and expiry dates, significantly reducing the risk of skimming, data theft, and fraudulent transactions. All card information is securely stored within the Prime NOW app, protected by multi-layer authentication options, including biometrics, and can be accessed instantly for online payments.

App-Based Control and Security Features

The card comes with a range of app-based functionalities, including QR activation, customizable spending limits, and digital reissuance. If the physical card is lost or stolen, it carries no usable information, giving cardholders added peace of mind. Users can also personalize the card’s design and e-commerce settings directly from the app.

Tanjil Chowdhury described the launch as a “shift towards a digital-first lifestyle” and emphasized the empowerment of consumers through enhanced privacy and control. “With the Prime NOW Numberless Card — a first for Bangladesh — we are breaking the status quo. We are moving from forced processes to empowered choices,” he said.

Syed Mohammad Kamal highlighted the significance of numberless technology in the country’s evolving payments landscape. “This launch marks a milestone in Bangladesh’s digital payments journey. Numberless technology offers a safer and more intuitive way to transact, meeting the growing consumer demand for privacy and seamless control,” Kamal noted.

Cardholders will also enjoy year-round benefits at over 10,000 Mastercard partner merchants across Bangladesh, combining security, convenience, and rewards in a single digital-first experience.

The introduction of the Prime NOW numberless debit card signals a broader move toward secure, privacy-conscious, and digitally empowered banking solutions in Bangladesh, reflecting global trends in payment technology.
