Nigerian footballers were in action across Europe over the weekend, showcasing their talents in pivotal league and cup matches. From goals and assists to match-winning contributions and costly errors, the latest fixtures provided a snapshot of how the Super Eagles’ stars are faring in the 2025/26 season.

TURKEY

Victor Osimhen continued his rich vein of form for Galatasaray in the Turkish Trendyol Super Lig. The Nigerian striker scored in the 39th minute with a powerful header from a Leroy Sané cross to secure a 1–0 victory over Wilfred Ndidi’s Beşiktaş at the Tüpraş Stadium on Saturday. The result ended Beşiktaş’ impressive 18-game unbeaten streak and kept Galatasaray atop the league table.

Both Osimhen and Ndidi played the full 90 minutes, although Osimhen picked up an early yellow card in the sixth minute. His 18th goal and sixth assist in 26 appearances this season underline his consistency, while his record since joining Galatasaray—55 goals and 14 assists in 67 appearances—cements his status among Europe’s most prolific forwards.

ENGLAND

In FA Cup action, Nigerian players had a mixed weekend. Fulham’s trio of Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, and Calvin Bassey saw their cup campaigns end following a 1–0 defeat to Southampton. Iwobi came on as a substitute in the 65th minute, Chukwueze played the full match, and Bassey remained unused.

Meanwhile, Tolu Arokodare’s Wolverhampton Wanderers bowed out after a 3–1 loss to Liverpool, with the Nigerian striker featuring for 75 minutes before being replaced by Hwang Hee-chan.

In the Sky Bet Championship, Frank Onyeka played 77 minutes for Coventry City as they secured a 2–0 away victory over Bristol City, strengthening their hold on automatic promotion. Josh Eccles replaced Onyeka late in the match.

SPAIN

In La Liga, several Nigerian forwards left their mark. Umar Sadiq was instrumental in Valencia’s dramatic 3–2 comeback over Deportivo Alavés. Sadiq played the full 90 minutes and provided a crucial assist in the 47th minute, setting up Javi Guerra to equalize.

At Atlético Madrid, Ademola Lookman featured in a five-goal thriller against Real Sociedad. He was substituted in the 54th minute for Antoine Griezmann, who later set up a decisive goal in Atlético’s 3–2 win.

Sevilla striker Akor Adams found the net early against Rayo Vallecano, giving his side a 13th-minute lead following a pass from César Azpilicueta. However, the match ended in a 1–1 draw, with Adams substituted in the 67th minute for Isaac Romero. Fellow Nigerian Chidera Ejuke came on for Alexis Sánchez shortly after.

ITALY

In Serie A, goalkeeper Maduka Okoye experienced a challenging outing for Udinese. After Udinese built a two-goal advantage against Atalanta, a defensive miscue by Okoye allowed Gianluca Scamacca to score, and the match finished 2–2. Okoye later made a crucial save in the 83rd minute to deny a second goal from Nikola Krstović, partially redeeming his earlier error.

Gift Orban made an immediate impact on his return from suspension, providing an assist for Kieron Bowie in Hellas Verona’s 2–1 comeback win over Bologna. Orban had missed two matches following a red card in a previous game but played a key role in ending Verona’s 12-game winless run. He was substituted for Al-Musrati in stoppage time.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Salim Fago Lawal continued to impress for Viktoria Plzeň, scoring his second career goal in a comfortable 3–0 victory over Hradec Králové. The Nigerian forward gave Plzeň the lead just before halftime in the 44th minute, helping the team secure an important league win.

As the season progresses, Nigerian players are proving influential across multiple top-flight leagues, demonstrating their ability to shape results both domestically and in Europe’s competitive arenas.
