FIFA has officially approved the change of international allegiance for goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, making him eligible to represent Nigeria’s senior national team, the Super Eagles.

The confirmation, published on FIFA’s Change of Association platform on April 6, 2026, marks a significant step in Okonkwo’s international career. His registration now reflects the Nigeria Football Federation as his official national association, replacing his previous affiliation with The Football Association.

From England Youth International to Super Eagles Prospect

Born on September 9, 2001, in Camden, London, to Nigerian (Igbo) parents, Okonkwo developed through the youth ranks of Arsenal FC, joining the club’s academy at the age of eight.

He represented England at various youth levels between 2015 and 2019, featuring for the U-15, U-16, U-17, and U-18 teams. However, having never made a senior appearance for England’s national side, he remained eligible to switch allegiance under FIFA regulations.

Rising Profile at Club Level

Now 24, Okonkwo is the first-choice goalkeeper for Wrexham AFC, competing in the EFL Championship following his permanent move from Arsenal. Standing at nearly two metres tall, he has built a reputation this season for commanding performances and crucial saves, playing a key role in his club’s campaign.

His consistent form has not gone unnoticed, positioning him as a strong contender for Nigeria’s goalkeeping setup.

Boost for Nigeria’s Goalkeeping Options

Okonkwo’s switch comes after reported talks with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle during the Unity Cup in London last year. Although administrative delays prevented his inclusion in Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, his eligibility is now fully confirmed.

His addition provides increased depth and competition in the goalkeeping department, where established names like Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye are already in contention.

With his international future now settled, attention will turn to when Okonkwo could make his debut for Nigeria, as the Super Eagles continue to strengthen their squad ahead of upcoming competitions.
