Big Brother Naija Lockdown winner Laycon says victory reshaped his life, reveals it helped save his mother and altered his personal journey after fame.
The reality TV star and musician has shared a deeply personal account of how winning Big Brother Naija Lockdown changed the course of his life and provided critical support for his family, stating that the outcome of the show had life-saving consequences for his mother.
Speaking during an interview on the Echo Room podcast monitored by PUNCH Online and published on Tuesday, Laycon reflected on his pre-fame struggles and the turning point that came with his time on the reality show, explaining that the financial rewards and exposure from his win created access to help at a crucial moment.
“Winning BBNaija saved my mother’s life,” he said, describing the impact the opportunity had on his family’s wellbeing and the relief it brought during a difficult period.
He added that before his rise to fame, life circumstances were challenging, but the visibility and benefits that followed his victory significantly transformed his family’s situation, giving them stability and support they previously lacked.
Beyond the immediate impact on his family, Laycon said the experience also reshaped his outlook on life, responsibility, and the entertainment industry, noting that fame brought both opportunity and pressure in equal measure.
He explained that while the platform opened doors in music, writing, and other creative fields, it also came with emotional and psychological challenges that affected his sense of identity.
“I lost my inner voice after BBNaija win,” he said, describing the internal struggle that followed his sudden rise to public attention and expectations.
Laycon also revealed that his entry into acting and filmmaking was largely driven by opportunities that came after the show, rather than prior experience in the field. According to him, producers frequently reached out due to his popularity rather than his acting credentials.
“They told me how I did great in the house and wanted me on their projects,” he said.
However, he noted that he approached such offers cautiously, questioning whether they were based on talent or commercial appeal.
“You haven’t seen me act, so I don’t think it’s because of my acting talent. I think it’s because it’s me, and you want your movie to do numbers,” he said.
The artiste added that he eventually explored broader creative paths, including scriptwriting and further academic pursuits, as he worked to balance music, film, and education while navigating his evolving career.
He also acknowledged that public perception of his decisions often varies widely, regardless of intent.
“Everybody would always have their opinion as to why people do what they do,” he said.
Despite the pressures that followed his reality TV success, Laycon maintained that the experience ultimately changed his life and that of his family, even as he continues to adapt to fame and redefine his creative direction.
