Meristem Stockbrokers Limited has announced the appointment of Mr. Oscar Nduka Onyema as its new Chairman, in a leadership move that underscores the firm’s intent to strengthen governance and strategic direction within Nigeria’s evolving capital market landscape.

The appointment, disclosed in a market bulletin dated April 17, 2026, and circulated by NGX Regulation Limited, remains subject to approval by the regulatory authority. The notification, signed by Chinedu Akamaka, Head of Market Regulation at NGX Regulation Limited, confirms that Meristem has formally communicated the board change to the Exchange in line with required disclosure protocols.

According to the regulator, the appointment will only take full effect upon completion of the fit-and-proper assessment process and subsequent clearance. As part of standard governance procedures, stakeholders are also invited to submit objections or comments within seven days of the publication date.

In its statement, NGX Regulation Limited noted: “The above-named Trading License Holder (Meristem Stockbrokers Limited) has notified NGX Regulation Limited of the appointment of a new director and is seeking approval for the appointment of Mr. Oscar Nduka Onyema as Chairman.”

The development marks a significant leadership transition for Meristem Stockbrokers, a licensed dealing member of the Nigerian Exchange, as it positions itself for its next phase of growth amid increasing regulatory scrutiny and expanding market participation.

A seasoned capital markets executive

Mr. Onyema brings to the role an extensive track record in Nigeria’s financial markets. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and a Master of Business Administration in Finance and Investments from the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College, City University of New York.

He currently serves as Chairman of JEX Markets Limited and is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the modernization of Nigeria’s capital market infrastructure.

His most prominent leadership roles include serving as Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc, as well as Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Stock Exchange. Across these positions, he played a central role in reshaping market operations, governance frameworks, and trading systems.

A legacy of market transformation

Mr. Onyema’s tenure in Nigeria’s capital market leadership—spanning over a decade from 2011 to 2024—coincided with a period of major structural reform and modernization. He assumed office at the Nigerian Stock Exchange during a challenging post-2008 financial crisis era marked by low investor confidence and limited market depth.

Under his leadership, the Exchange underwent extensive reforms, including the demutualisation process completed in 2021, which transitioned the institution into Nigerian Exchange Group Plc with a new corporate and governance structure. His administration also prioritized technology upgrades, improved market transparency, and strengthened operational resilience, particularly during the COVID-19 disruption period.

These reforms are widely credited with restoring investor confidence and aligning Nigeria’s capital market more closely with global standards.

Strategic implications for Meristem

Industry observers view Onyema’s appointment as a potentially significant milestone for Meristem Stockbrokers, especially as capital market firms increasingly focus on governance strength, technological innovation, and regulatory compliance.

His expected entry into the boardroom comes at a time when Nigeria’s financial markets are undergoing rapid transformation, with firms adapting to new regulatory frameworks and rising retail and institutional participation.

If approved, his appointment is expected to reinforce Meristem’s strategic positioning, particularly in areas such as market infrastructure, trading systems, and institutional investment development, leveraging his deep experience in both regulatory and operational aspects of capital markets leadership.
