...to Boost Journalism Skills Across Continent

Telecommunications giant MTN Group has announced the opening of applications for the 2026 cohort of its Pan-African Media Innovation Programme (MIP), an initiative designed to strengthen journalism practice and media innovation across Africa.

The programme targets mid- to senior-level journalists, editors, and media professionals across MTN’s operating markets who are seeking to enhance their expertise in digital transformation, media ethics, and innovation-driven storytelling.

According to the announcement, the initiative is structured as a 12-week certified learning journey delivered over a six-month period. It combines online academic coursework with a physical immersion phase hosted in Johannesburg in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg.

The curriculum focuses on key challenges facing modern journalism, including newsroom innovation, media sustainability, evolving digital platforms, and the influence of emerging technologies on the information ecosystem. The programme also places emphasis on strengthening ethical standards and leadership capacity within African media organisations.

This 2026 edition builds on a previously successful pilot in Nigeria before expanding into a continent-wide platform in partnership with the University of Johannesburg and the African Editors Forum.

Organisers say the initiative reflects MTN’s broader goal of developing a network of forward-thinking media leaders capable of driving innovation and improving storytelling standards across Africa.

Applications are open to eligible media practitioners across MTN markets, with a submission deadline set for 30 April 2026. Candidates will be selected based on professional merit, demonstrated impact, and commitment to advancing the future of African journalism, with final selection overseen independently by the partner institutions.
