The company said on Monday that it will introduce tailored accounts for children as part of a broader effort to strengthen online safeguards and improve content moderation. Under the new system, users aged 5 to 8 will be placed into “Roblox Kids” accounts, while those aged 9 to 15 will be assigned to “Roblox Select” accounts. The rollout is scheduled to begin in early June.
The changes will be implemented through age verification or parental authentication systems, with the platform also introducing stricter content standards to determine which experiences and games are visible to each user category. According to the company, all content must meet defined maturity thresholds before appearing in either account type.
Matt Kaufman, Chief Safety Officer at Roblox, said the initiative is part of a broader safety push aimed at improving protections for younger users. He noted that games available under the “Kids” category will undergo a rigorous three-stage review process, with tighter eligibility requirements imposed on developers seeking to publish content for younger audiences.
As part of the changes, chat functionality will be disabled by default for “Roblox Kids” accounts, while limited communication features will be gradually introduced for “Roblox Select” users depending on age and safety considerations.
The platform also said developers will be required to complete identity verification, enable two-factor authentication, and maintain an active subscription to Roblox’s upcoming premium service in order to participate in the ecosystem. The subscription plan, announced separately, is set to launch on April 30 at $4.99 per month, offering in-game discounts and additional platform benefits.
The policy shift comes as Roblox continues to face sustained criticism from regulators and advocacy groups across several countries over allegations that its systems have not done enough to protect children from exploitation and inappropriate interactions.
Company officials say the updated structure is intended to create a safer and more controlled digital environment, particularly for its youngest users, while maintaining access to creative and educational gaming experiences within clearly defined boundaries.
The move marks one of the platform’s most significant safety reforms in recent years as it attempts to balance rapid global growth with increasing pressure to strengthen trust and accountability in its online community.
