Early Reactions Trail Anticipated Michael Jackson Biopic “Michael” Following Star-Studded Los Angeles Premiere
Buzz has begun building around the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic Michael, after the film held a high-profile U.S. premiere in Los Angeles on Monday night, with initial audience reactions now circulating across social media ahead of its official critical rollout.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film had earlier premiered internationally in Berlin on April 10, but reactions from American press and industry viewers have only just begun to surface following the Los Angeles screening. Full critical reviews are scheduled for release on April 22, while the global theatrical release is set for April 24.
Positioned as the first major studio biographical film centered on the late pop icon Michael Jackson, the production traces his journey from childhood performances with the Jackson 5 under Motown to his emergence as a global solo superstar.
The film is produced by Graham King, whose previous work includes the Academy Award-winning Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, raising expectations for a similarly large-scale box office performance.
In a notable casting choice, Jackson is portrayed by his real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson, while the younger version of the artist is played by Juliano Krue Valdi. The ensemble cast features several prominent Hollywood names, including Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, and Miles Teller as attorney John Branca.
Additional casting highlights include Kendrick Sampson as legendary producer Quincy Jones and Larenz Tate as Motown executive Berry Gordy, alongside portrayals of several members of the Jackson family by a rotating cast of actors depicting both their younger and older versions.
While anticipation continues to grow, discussion has also centered on how the film approaches the more controversial aspects of Jackson’s life, a subject that has long surrounded any attempt to dramatize his legacy.
With early reactions now emerging and full reviews imminent, Michael is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched biographical releases of the year, particularly given its access to Jackson’s music catalogue and its focus on one of the most influential figures in modern pop history.
MICHAEL presents an overly audience-friendly take on Michael Jackson’s life story (only up until the release of “Bad”) that will work for the masses and devoted fans eager to watch one of the world’s largest entertainers at the peak of his popularity “play the hits” and find the… pic.twitter.com/CS2Q1HpbGP

Jaafar Jackson is tremendous in MICHAEL, truly making you forget he isn’t the real thing. An off-the-charts performance.

The rest of the movie is about as generic as you can get. Fans will love the musical performances, but there’s sadly no humanity behind them. pic.twitter.com/Fxax2ZHtID
I usually enjoy a good music biopic but Michael is so boring and one-note, maybe because we already know MJ's story and this is pretty much the Colman Domingo show... for the diehard fans only.

Just saw the Michael movie.

Tough.

Jafaar Jackson is unreal in MICHAEL. I know the voice was assisted, but the demeanor and dance moves and overall presence is really amazing to watch.

MICHAEL is an extraordinarily sanitized, overly audience-friendly music biopic that makes Bohemian Rhapsody look like a complex, nuanced character study. #MichaelMovie is the best musical biopic I’ve ever seen, and it’s fitting for arguably the greatest performer of all time. What separates this film is the fact that Jaafar is LITERALLY MICHAEL. I’m still gathering my thoughts, but the #michaelmovie was incredible. Jaafar, Colman, Nia… Academy Award worthy. If you go in looking for a caricature of Michael Jackson, you will be “disappointed” because that’s not who he was. If you go in with an open mind, you’ll walk away…

Jafaar Jackson’s spectacular spot-on recreations of MJ are a highlight in a powerful, albeit safe movie about a singular, legendary musician.

#MichaelMovie brought me back to the awe & wow I felt when first discovering Michael’s music as a kid. Jaafar Jackson nails the role. Colman Domingo is a chilling presence. #Michael features two absolutely smashing performances, Jaafar Jackson is ELECTRIC in his role, while Colman Domingo is monstrous as Joe Jackson.
