A historic breakthrough in European football has been confirmed as Union Berlin appoints Marie-Louise Eta as interim head coach of its men’s first team, marking the first time a woman has taken full charge of a side in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

The landmark decision follows the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart, whose tenure came to an end after a prolonged run of poor results that left the club’s Bundesliga status under increasing threat.

Poor Form Forces Managerial Change

Union’s hierarchy acted swiftly after a 3–1 defeat to 1. FC Heidenheim, a result that underscored the الفريق’s alarming decline in form. Since the winter break, the club has managed just two wins in 14 matches, prompting concerns despite their current 11th-place standing.

With only a narrow cushion above the relegation play-off zone and five fixtures remaining, the club opted for a complete overhaul of its technical setup. Alongside Baumgart, assistant coaches Danilo de Souza and Kevin McKenna have also departed.

In an official statement, sporting director Horst Heldt acknowledged the الفريق’s precarious position, stressing the urgency of securing points to avoid a late-season slide.

Eta’s Appointment Signals Historic Shift

Eta’s promotion represents a watershed moment not only for the Bundesliga but for European football at large. At 34, she becomes the first woman to lead a men’s team at this level across the continent’s elite leagues.

While the appointment carries major symbolic significance, Eta’s immediate focus remains firmly on results. With the relegation battle still unresolved, her short-term mandate is to stabilise performances and secure the points needed to guarantee survival.

Familiar Face Steps Up

Eta is no stranger to Union Berlin’s داخلی structure. Earlier in the 2023–24 campaign, she made history as the Bundesliga’s first female assistant coach and has long been embedded within the club’s development system, working her way up from youth فوتبال roles.

She also gained valuable first-team exposure when she briefly stepped in during the suspension of former head coach Nenad Bjelica, offering a glimpse of her leadership credentials at the senior level.

Short-Term Role, Long-Term Impact

Union confirmed that Eta will lead the men’s side through the remainder of the season before transitioning into her previously planned role as head coach of the club’s women’s team in the summer.

Regardless of how the campaign concludes, her appointment is already being viewed as a significant step forward in breaking long-standing gender barriers in elite football—one that could reshape perceptions of coaching at the highest level of the game.
