Nollywood actress Victoria Inyama has issued a public apology following widespread criticism over remarks she made appearing to support female circumcision during a recent Instagram live session.
Inyama had made the comments while speaking with media personality Daddy Freeze, where she described the practice as a positive personal experience and “the best thing” that happened to her—remarks that quickly sparked outrage online.
Responding to the backlash in a follow-up video shared on Daddy Freeze’s Instagram page, the actress admitted she had been uninformed about the broader realities and dangers of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
She explained that her earlier comments were based solely on her personal experience growing up in the village under her grandmother’s care, adding that she did not realise the severity of the practice in other contexts.
According to Inyama, a midwife later reached out to educate her on the medical and psychological implications of FGM, including cases where victims are subjected to extreme procedures such as stitching. She also recounted how a close family figure shared a traumatic experience of being hospitalised for a week as a teenager due to the practice.
Acknowledging the harm caused by her remarks, Inyama stated that she now understands the gravity of FGM and described the practice as harmful. She apologised to those offended, noting that her comments were made without full knowledge of the issue.
The actress added that she is now better informed and committed to learning more, pledging to be more mindful in future discussions around sensitive cultural and health-related topics.
