Calls have continued to mount across social media platforms urging the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate and possibly prosecute popular influencer Blessing Nkiruka, widely known as Blessing CEO, over allegations of false medical claims and fundraising.

The controversy stems from her earlier public statement in which she claimed to be battling stage 4 cancer and subsequently appealed for financial support. According to her, Nigerians donated a total of ₦13 million following the appeal, a revelation that has since sparked outrage and skepticism.

Public Doubts and Demand for Proof

After videos of her claims went viral, reactions from Nigerians were sharply divided. While some sympathized with her and contributed financially, others questioned the authenticity of the diagnosis, urging her to provide verifiable medical records.

The situation escalated further when Blessing CEO, in an interview with online personality Egungun of Lagos, clarified that the diagnosis was the result of a misunderstanding. She explained that she had not begun chemotherapy and only received biopsy results indicating the presence of a lump.

According to her account, initial tests suggested the lump was non-cancerous, but subsequent examinations indicated otherwise, leading to confusion about the severity of her condition.

EFCC Responds to Public Pressure

Despite growing calls for official action, the EFCC has stated that it has not received any formal petition regarding the matter. When contacted, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale declined to comment directly on the issue.

However, a senior official within the agency, speaking anonymously, emphasized that the commission does not act solely on social media agitation. The source noted that formal petitions and credible evidence are required before any investigation or prosecution can commence.

The official added that while the agency may independently gather intelligence, it remains committed to due process and would require substantial information to build a case suitable for court proceedings.

A Controversial Public Figure

Blessing CEO is no stranger to public scrutiny. Known for her outspoken views on relationships, love, and sexuality, she has built a strong online presence often marked by controversy.

Born in Ebonyi State, she gained prominence as a relationship expert offering candid advice, but her career has been punctuated by several high-profile incidents. In 2019, she falsely claimed ownership of a mansion in Enugu, a statement later debunked by the property’s actual owner, leading to her public apology.

She has also been involved in the widely discussed relationship saga involving businessman Ikechukwu Darlington Ogbonna, popularly known as IVD, and his late wife. Following the death of IVD’s wife in 2022, Blessing CEO’s subsequent relationship with him further fueled public debate.

What Lies Ahead

As the backlash continues, the future of the case largely depends on whether concerned individuals or groups will file an official petition with the EFCC. Until then, the agency maintains that social media reactions alone are insufficient grounds for legal action.

The incident once again highlights the growing influence of social media personalities—and the scrutiny that comes with it—especially when public trust and financial contributions are involved.
