Former President of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, has appealed to friends, colleagues, fans, and the broader entertainment industry to suspend any planned birthday celebrations for him this year, following the death of actor Alex Ekubo.

Rollas said the decision was made out of respect for Ekubo, whose passing he described as a painful loss for the creative community.

Tribute to Alex Ekubo

Recall that Alex Ekubo died on Monday, May 11, at the age of 40 after a brief battle with advanced metastatic kidney cancer. His family confirmed that he passed away at Evercare Hospital.

The late actor was widely known within Nollywood for his performances in romantic dramas and television productions, and his death has continued to generate tributes across the industry.

‘My Heart Is Too Heavy for Festivities’ – Rollas

In a statement shared on Instagram, Rollas said the emotional weight of Ekubo’s death made celebrations inappropriate at this time.

“Today would have been a day of celebration for me, but my heart is too heavy for festivities,” he wrote.

He added that instead of birthday events or surprises, he prefers a period of reflection and unity across the industry.

“In honour of our beloved brother, colleague, and former Special Assistant on Youth Development during my administration at the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Alex Ekubo, I humbly appeal to friends, family, colleagues, fans, and the entire entertainment industry not to organise any birthday surprises, celebrations, or parties for me at this moment.”

Call for Two-Minute Silence Nationwide

Rollas further urged members of the creative industry to observe a collective moment of silence in Ekubo’s memory.

“Instead of celebrations, I ask for just one birthday gift today… we observe two minutes of silence in honour of Alex Ekubo,” he stated.

He called for the gesture to be observed across film sets, studios, cinemas, offices, and homes as a symbolic tribute to the late actor.

‘A Man Whose Talent Touched Many Lives’

Reflecting on Ekubo’s legacy, Rollas praised his personality and contributions to the film industry, describing him as a talented and warm presence whose impact extended beyond the screen.

“Let us pause together to remember a man whose talent, warmth, laughter, and presence touched so many lives,” he wrote.

He concluded by praying for the repose of Ekubo’s soul and strength for those mourning his passing.

Industry Continues to Mourn

Ekubo’s death has left a noticeable emotional impact within Nollywood, with colleagues, fans, and industry stakeholders continuing to share tributes celebrating his life and career.

Rollas’ call adds to the growing wave of remembrance, positioning the moment as one of collective mourning and reflection across Nigeria’s entertainment community.
