Nigeria’s growing push for digital inclusion received another boost as Vitel Wireless unveiled a new partnership with fintech giants OPay Limited and Moniepoint Limited aimed at simplifying access to telecom services for millions of Nigerians.
The collaboration will allow customers of both fintech platforms to purchase Vitel Wireless airtime and data bundles directly from their bank accounts and digital wallets, creating a more seamless connection between financial technology and mobile communication services.
According to the company, the initiative is designed to improve access to affordable connectivity, particularly in rural and underserved communities where digital services are still limited.
Speaking on the development, Vitel Wireless Chief Operating Officer, Chudi Nwabueze, said the agreement reflects the growing synergy between Nigeria’s fintech and telecommunications sectors.
“Vitel Wireless continues to showcase the close collaboration between financial services and telecom services by extending its partnership model with traditional banks such as Fidelity Bank and Zenith Bank to fintech giants such as Opay and Moniepoint,” he stated.
Nwabueze explained that integrating telecom purchases into widely used fintech platforms would remove several barriers faced by users when trying to recharge airtime or subscribe to data services.
He noted that customers can now conveniently top up airtime and activate data plans through their existing fintech applications, a move expected to enhance user experience while expanding digital access across the country.
Also commenting on the partnership, Vitel Wireless Product Marketing Manager, Odera Ben-Chiobi, described the initiative as part of the company’s broader mission to make connectivity accessible to more Nigerians.
“This collaboration aligns with our mission to democratise access to mobile connectivity across Nigeria. By partnering with leading fintech platforms like Opay and Moniepoint, we are bringing telecom services closer to millions of Nigerians, particularly in rural areas where access has traditionally been limited,” she said.
Ben-Chiobi further explained that the partnership goes beyond telecom services, adding that it also contributes to ongoing efforts to deepen financial inclusion nationwide.
According to her, combining mobile connectivity with digital financial platforms creates a more efficient ecosystem where users can access essential services quickly, securely, and at lower costs.
Vitel Wireless currently operates nationwide through its infrastructure-sharing agreement with MTN Nigeria, enabling the telecom provider to leverage MTN’s radio network infrastructure across the country.
Industry observers say the collaboration could further accelerate the penetration of both fintech and telecom services into areas that have historically lacked reliable access to banking and communication infrastructure.
Ben-Chiobi emphasized that the initiative reflects a shared commitment among the partners to drive inclusive growth and increase participation in Nigeria’s digital economy.
“These initiatives underscore a shared commitment to inclusive growth, ensuring that more Nigerians can participate in the digital economy through reliable connectivity and accessible financial tools,” she added.
Both OPay and Moniepoint have emerged as dominant players in Nigeria’s fintech ecosystem, supported by millions of users and extensive agent networks nationwide. Analysts believe their partnership with Vitel Wireless could significantly improve digital accessibility for low-income and previously underserved populations across the country.
