Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o has pushed back against online criticism surrounding her casting in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey, saying she is choosing not to be drawn into debates over the decision.

Set for theatrical release on July 17, the film is a large-scale adaptation of Homer’s classic mythological tale and features Nyong’o in dual roles as Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra.

Speaking in an interview with Elle magazine, she made it clear that she is not preoccupied with defending the casting choices.

“The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not,” she said. “This is a mythological story. I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it, and with the version of this story that he is telling.”

She added that the scale of the production naturally calls for an expansive interpretation of the story and its characters. “The Odyssey is so grand. It spans worlds. That’s why the cast is what it is. We’re occupying the epic narrative of our time,” she said.

The casting announcement had sparked debate online, with some social media users questioning the creative direction, including racially charged commentary. Nyong’o, however, said she is focused on the essence of the character rather than external expectations tied to appearance.

“An actor can’t perform beauty. I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks?” she said.

Director Christopher Nolan also defended her involvement, praising her interpretation of Helen of Troy.

“The strength and the poise were so important to the character of Helen, and Lupita makes it look effortless,” Nolan said. “I was absolutely desperate for her to do the part.”

The film boasts a star-studded ensemble cast including Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, John Leguizamo, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, and Travis Scott.

Nyong’o said she considers the role an honour, describing Helen as an iconic figure in mythology. “She is iconic. What more can I say? I’m so deeply honoured to be entrusted with her,” she said.

The Odyssey is being distributed by Universal Pictures and is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated film releases of the year.
