The incident happened aboard United Airlines Flight 1551, a Boeing 737 Max 8 that departed from Newark Liberty International Airport with 145 passengers and six crew members on board. What began as a routine international flight quickly turned tense when the passenger reportedly caused a disturbance in the cabin mid-flight.
According to air traffic control audio, the situation escalated after the individual allegedly tried to open the aircraft’s left-side cabin door while the jet was airborne. During radio communication with the control tower, the pilot confirmed the severity of the incident.
“Door 2L at 36,000 feet and then [the passenger] assaulted a fellow passenger,” the pilot told controllers.
Air traffic control then asked whether there were any injuries reported onboard.
“Not to our knowledge,” the pilot responded.
The aircraft was safely diverted to Washington Dulles International Airport, where it landed without further incident at approximately 8:38 p.m. Law enforcement officers were already waiting on the ground as the plane taxied in.
In a statement released afterward, United Airlines confirmed authorities met the aircraft upon arrival.
“The flight was met by law enforcement to address an unruly passenger,” the airline said. “The flight was canceled, with a replacement flight added for Friday morning, and customers were provided overnight accommodations.”
While officials have not yet released the identity of the passenger or possible charges, the FBI confirmed that agents responded to the disturbance at Dulles Airport. However, the agency declined to provide additional details as investigations continue.
The alarming incident adds to a growing number of disruptive passenger cases reported across the aviation industry in recent years. Aviation experts note that attempting to interfere with an aircraft door during flight is treated as an extremely serious offense, often leading to federal investigation and criminal prosecution.
Despite the chaos onboard, the flight crew was praised for handling the emergency calmly and ensuring the safety of everyone aboard. Passengers were later rebooked for a replacement flight scheduled for Friday morning.
