Shock and heartbreak swept across Nollywood on Tuesday as actors, filmmakers, and fans reacted to the reported death of celebrated actor Alex Ekubo, popularly known as “Ikuku.”

The news of his passing triggered an outpouring of grief across Instagram and X, where colleagues shared emotional memories of the actor, describing him as compassionate, loyal, respectful, and deeply supportive behind the scenes.

Among the most emotional tributes was that of actress and filmmaker Omoni Oboli, who referred to the late actor as her “bestie.” Struggling to contain her pain, she wrote:

“I’m so upset! Who will help me fight death? This is too much! How are we supposed to move on? How do we say goodbye? I’m devastated. My bestie! Why? We had a plan! Where do I start from?”

Her message reflected the disbelief that has gripped many within the entertainment industry, especially those who maintained close personal relationships with the actor beyond movie sets and public appearances.

Media mogul Mo Abudu also paid tribute, recalling the warm relationship she shared with Ekubo, who often called her “Mum.” In a deeply personal note, she expressed regret over a message she never followed up on.

“We hadn’t spoken in a while. I remember you travelled last year and replied when you got back. I sent another message after that, and when you didn’t respond, I didn’t follow up. I never imagined there wouldn’t be another chance.

“Dear Alex, you will be so deeply missed. You were such a beautiful human being, loving, real, kind, and always so respectful every single time we worked together.”

Veteran actress Kate Henshaw reflected on the support Ekubo gave her during one of the darkest periods of her life — the loss of her mother two years ago. According to her, the actor remained reassuring whenever friends checked in on him.

“We chatted when I noticed your absence on SM, and you said you were fine. I wanted a chance to repay you for your kindness at that time, but not like this, Alex.

“I pray God accepts your soul and comforts your loved ones left behind. Goodbye, rest in the bosom of God Almighty from whom you came.”

Several of his colleagues echoed similar sentiments, revealing that Ekubo often insisted he was okay whenever concerns were raised about him.

Actress Yvonne Jegede admitted she was struggling to process the news.

“I can’t process this. I checked on him, and he kept saying he was fine. It’s so sad. Are you telling me I will never see Ikuku again? So I won’t hear him scream CHOCO with a big smile again? This is unimaginable. My spirit is broken.

“I am glad I had the opportunity to be a friend. You were a wonderful person. Rest Well, Champ Alex ‘Ikuku’ Ekubo.”

Actor Kunle Remi described the late movie star as “a good man,” writing:

“Ikuku The Breeze. This really hurts, bro! I checked on you… I still spoke about you yesterday… A good man. God is taking care of you. Bask in His peace.”

For actress Ruth Kadiri, the loss was one she feared but hoped would never happen.

“I made sure to check up on him regularly. I feared for this day, yet it finally came. Rest well, Alexxx… and God give your family the heart to bear the loss. Sleep well, IKUKU.”

More tributes continued to flood social media from stars including Ini Dima-Okojie, Bucci Franklin, Dayo Amusa, and singer Johnny Drille. Dayo Amusa noted that her “heart feels so heavy” over the painful loss of a colleague and friend.

Reports indicate that the actor’s passing was announced by fellow Nollywood stars, including actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele, who disclosed that she had made efforts to see him before his death.

Widely admired for his charisma, striking screen presence, and vibrant personality, Alex Ekubo carved a respected place for himself in Nollywood over the years. Beyond his performances, many colleagues remembered him as someone who constantly showed up for others, offered encouragement freely, and maintained genuine friendships within the industry.

His death leaves a painful void in Nigeria’s entertainment community, with fans and colleagues continuing to mourn a man many described as kind-hearted, graceful, and unforgettable.
