Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of its 2016 animated blockbuster Moana is tracking toward an estimated $85 million opening weekend in North America when it hits cinemas on July 10, according to three-week pre-release projections reported Thursday.

The film brings back Dwayne Johnson as Maui, reprising the role he originally voiced in the animated version. Newcomer Catherine Laga'aia steps into the title role of Moana, replacing original voice actor Auli'i Cravalho. The project is directed by Thomas Kail, known for Fosse/Verdon.

Moderating Expectations Amid a Crowded Summer Box Office

While the projected $85M debut signals strong interest, it sits below earlier franchise highs and reflects a more competitive theatrical landscape. Industry watchers point to a packed release calendar that includes major family and animation titles arriving in close succession.

One of the key comparisons being made is with other recent or upcoming tentpoles. The report notes that the projection is “on par with Uni’s live-action take of DreamWorks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon, which began with $84.6M last year.”

It also highlights the pressure from competing releases, including strong forecasts for major animated franchises arriving around the same period, which may fragment family audiences.

Audience Interest Strong but Fragmented

Early tracking suggests the film’s strongest appeal lies with families and women over 25, though not at the same intensity seen with recent Disney animated sequels.

As the report observes, interest among parents taking children under 12 is “even on taking their kids under 12 to see Moana, but again that’s way behind versus Moana 2 when that hit tracking.”

Younger female audiences remain a key demographic driver, with the film positioned “well behind Lilo & Stitch and Moana 2 when they hit tracking but ahead of Mufasa and How to Train Your Dragon.”

The original Moana, released in 2016, previously opened to about $82 million over Thanksgiving (a $56.5M three-day frame), setting a historical benchmark that the live-action remake is now approaching in similar range.

A Familiar Story Returning With New Faces

The live-action adaptation revisits the ocean-spanning journey of Moana and the demigod Maui, blending familiar storytelling with a new cast and production approach under director Thomas Kail.

Despite early caution in projections, analysts suggest the final outcome will depend heavily on late marketing momentum, word-of-mouth reception, and how audiences respond to Disney’s continued push into live-action reimaginings.
