Despite a lengthy and highly publicised custody dispute with tech billionaire Elon Musk, Canadian singer and songwriter Grimes says her primary focus remains building a healthy and supportive relationship with their three children.

The former couple, whose on-and-off relationship attracted global attention, were first linked romantically in 2018. During their time together, they welcomed three children: son X Æ A-Xii in May 2020, daughter Exa Dark Sideræl via surrogate in December 2021, and son Techno Mechanicus in June 2022.

Parenting Responsibilities and Family Dynamics

Musk, who has fathered several children with different partners, previously acknowledged that Grimes took on most parenting responsibilities during the early months of their eldest son's life.

Speaking to The New York Times shortly after X’s birth, Musk said: “Grimes has a much bigger role than I right now. When the kid gets older, there will be more of a role for me.”

Beyond his children with Grimes, Musk is also the father of children from his previous marriage to Justine Wilson as well as children with Shivon Zilis, an executive associated with one of his companies.

Grimes Opens Up About Parenting Philosophy

Over the years, Grimes has frequently spoken about the importance of motherhood and maintaining a strong bond with her children.

In an interview with Wired in August 2023, she described her approach to parenting as balancing guidance with friendship.

“I really care about having a very good relationship with my kids,” she said. “Both enforcing discipline and being their friend.”

The comments offered a glimpse into how the artist views her role as a parent, emphasizing emotional connection alongside responsibility and structure.

Custody Battle Takes Personal and Creative Toll

The relationship between Musk and Grimes has also been marked by legal challenges concerning parental rights and custody arrangements.

In October 2023, Grimes filed a petition seeking to establish parental rights involving all three children. The legal proceedings have since evolved into a prolonged dispute.

By November 2024, the musician revealed on social media that the ongoing court battle had significantly affected her professional life, saying the demands of the case had limited her ability to focus on creating new music.

According to Grimes, the legal process became a major burden, impacting both her time and creative energy.

Balancing Family and Career

While the custody proceedings continue to attract public attention because of the high-profile figures involved, Grimes has consistently framed the issue around her desire to maintain a positive and meaningful relationship with her children.

Her recent comments underscore the challenges of balancing parenthood, legal disputes and a creative career, while highlighting her commitment to remaining actively involved in her children's lives.
