The Red Devils are actively exploring midfield reinforcements, with West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes and Atalanta's Ederson among the names linked with a move to Old Trafford. Any additional income could prove crucial as the club looks to reshape its squad.
A key source of potential revenue stems from Greenwood's transfer to Marseille in 2024. According to reports from the Manchester Evening News, United negotiated a substantial 40 per cent sell-on clause when they agreed to sell the academy graduate to the French side in a deal worth £26 million.
That clause may now be about to pay off.
Reports emerging from Turkey suggest Marseille are willing to consider offers in the region of £47.5 million for Greenwood, who enjoyed an impressive campaign in Ligue 1. If such a deal is completed, Manchester United could reportedly receive close to £19 million from the transfer due to the sell-on agreement.
The strongest indication of a possible move has come from Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi, who has publicly claimed that an agreement with Greenwood has already been secured should he win the upcoming election.
Speaking about the proposed transfer, Safi said:
"We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood. He has proven himself at the highest level of European football."
He added:
"He has agreed to join Fenerbahce during the most valuable and productive years of his career."
Safi also expressed satisfaction at delivering on a major campaign promise.
"I said I would bring a star player. Today, I am experiencing the justified pride of keeping my promise."
A successful sale would represent another welcome boost for Manchester United's finances during a summer that is already seeing significant movement behind the scenes.
The club have reportedly recovered around £38 million following the confirmation that Rasmus Hojlund's loan spell at Napoli has been converted into a permanent transfer after the Danish striker helped the Italian side secure qualification for next season's UEFA Champions League.
In addition, one of the club's highest earners, Casemiro, is expected to leave at the end of June, removing his reported £350,000-per-week wages from the payroll. The departure is expected to create further room within United's budget as they pursue multiple additions in midfield.
Atalanta's Ederson remains a priority target, with reports suggesting a deal worth around £35 million is already being explored. United are also monitoring West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes as they seek to strengthen a department that has been identified as a key area for improvement ahead of the new campaign.
With transfer activity accelerating across Europe, the potential Greenwood windfall could provide Manchester United with additional flexibility as they continue their squad rebuild and prepare for another crucial summer in the market.
