The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has underscored the significant role petroleum plays in modern technology, revealing that nearly half of the materials used in smartphones are derived from petroleum products.

In a statement shared on its official X account, the oil-producing group said petroleum derivatives are essential components in the manufacturing of smartphones and other digital technologies that have become integral to everyday life.

According to OPEC, approximately 45 percent of a smartphone’s composition is made up of petroleum-based plastics and related materials used in various parts of the device.

“Approximately 45% of smartphones are made from petroleum-derived plastics. Components such as cell phone towers, circuit boards, display screens, and durable polycarbonate casings, as well,” the organization stated.

The group noted that petroleum products are not only used in the outer structure of smartphones but also contribute to several critical components within the broader telecommunications ecosystem, including infrastructure that supports mobile connectivity.

OPEC said the contribution of oil extends far beyond transportation fuels, highlighting its importance in powering innovation and enabling modern communication technologies.

“From enabling communication and connectivity to supporting the digital economy, oil and its derivatives continue to contribute to technologies that keep the world connected,” the organization added.

The statement comes amid ongoing global conversations about energy transition, sustainability, and the future role of fossil fuels in an increasingly digital world. While renewable energy sources continue to gain prominence, petroleum remains a key raw material in the production of plastics, synthetic materials, electronics, medical equipment, and numerous consumer products.

Industry experts have long pointed out that many electronic devices rely on petrochemicals for components ranging from protective casings and insulation materials to wiring coatings and manufacturing processes. Polycarbonate plastics, commonly used in smartphone bodies and accessories, are among the petroleum-derived materials widely utilized because of their durability, flexibility, and lightweight properties.

OPEC's remarks highlight the continued dependence of modern technology on petroleum-based products, even as efforts intensify globally to reduce carbon emissions and transition toward cleaner energy sources.

The organization maintains that oil and its derivatives remain critical to supporting industries, innovation, and digital infrastructure that drive economic growth and global connectivity.
