The rapid growth underscores how quickly Threads has scaled since its debut in July 2023, positioning it as one of the fastest-growing social platforms in Meta’s ecosystem. The milestone also comes as Meta continues to build out the app’s advertising capabilities, increasing its competition with X in the digital ads market.
New Features Aim to Deepen User Control and Engagement
Alongside the user growth announcement, Meta unveiled a series of product updates designed to improve personalisation and community interaction on Threads.
One of the most notable additions is a feature called “Your Algo”, which allows users to privately adjust and influence the type of content they see in their feeds. The tool is being rolled out in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.
The company is also expanding its Communities feature, which is designed to make it easier for users to join topic-based groups and participate in discussions around shared interests. Meta says communities have become a key driver of engagement on the platform.
To support this growth, Threads will introduce a dedicated Communities hub along with improved discovery tools aimed at helping users find conversations aligned with their interests.
Building Toward a Stronger Ads Business
The latest updates also reflect Meta’s broader strategy to turn Threads into a meaningful revenue driver within its family of apps. As user engagement grows, the company is gradually integrating more advertising tools into the platform.
This puts Threads in more direct competition with X, as both platforms vie for a larger share of digital advertising spend in a highly competitive market.
From Launch to Mass Adoption in Under Three Years
Since its launch in July 2023, Threads has expanded rapidly by leveraging integration with Meta’s wider ecosystem, including Instagram. The platform was initially positioned as an alternative for real-time text-based conversations, especially for users seeking an option outside of X.
With half a billion monthly users now on the platform, Meta is signaling that Threads is no longer just an experimental product—but a core pillar of its social media strategy moving forward.
