Nigeria’s journey towards the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow enters a crucial phase this weekend as the nation’s top track and field athletes converge on Lagos for the official national trials.

The highly anticipated championship, scheduled to take place from June 20 to 22, 2026, at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) Sports Complex, will serve as the final selection platform for athletes seeking a place on Team Nigeria for the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

Organised under the supervision of the National Sports Commission (NSC), the three-day event is expected to attract some of the country's leading athletics stars, as well as a new generation of athletes eager to make their mark on the national stage.

Beyond determining Nigeria’s representatives for Glasgow 2026, the trials will provide competitors with an opportunity to achieve qualifying standards, test their readiness against elite opposition, and demonstrate their ability to perform under pressure.

Among the headline names expected to compete are shot put record holder Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Fakorede Adekalu, Tyler Johnson, and Ogundiran Blessing. They will be joined by several other established and emerging athletes who have continued to enhance Nigeria’s reputation in international athletics competitions.

Officials believe the championship will not only identify the country’s strongest medal prospects but also deepen competition across various track and field events ahead of the Games.

Reaffirming the commission’s commitment to fairness in athlete selection, the National Sports Commission stressed the importance of maintaining high standards throughout the process.

The NSC reiterated its “commitment to a transparent, competitive, and world-class selection process that reflects excellence and fairness,” while noting that the trials form a key part of Nigeria’s preparations for the Glasgow Games.

With national pride and Commonwealth Games qualification at stake, athletes are expected to deliver intense performances across the three days of competition as they battle for coveted spots on Team Nigeria.

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, bringing together athletes from across the Commonwealth in one of the world's premier multi-sport events.
