Lagos’ Business Elite Celebrate Dr Eghosa Imasuen’s The Challengers, a Story of Partnership, Vision and Enterprise
The launch of The Challengers, the latest book by acclaimed Nigerian author Dr Eghosa Imasuen, brought together some of Lagos’ most influential voices in business, culture and leadership as guests gathered for an evening dedicated to celebrating resilience, collaboration and the power of shared ambition.
Held on Monday evening at the prestigious Radisson Blu Anchorage Hotel, the public presentation attracted business executives, entrepreneurs, policymakers, media figures, investors and literary enthusiasts who came together to witness the unveiling of a book that chronicles one of Nigeria’s most remarkable entrepreneurial journeys.
The event carried an atmosphere of sophistication and inspiration, blending literary appreciation with conversations around enterprise building and leadership. From the carefully curated “Wall of Challengers” installation to networking sessions over cocktails, every element of the evening reflected the themes at the heart of the book — determination, trust, innovation and collective action.
Rather than a traditional book launch, the gathering evolved into an immersive experience where storytelling, business and ideas converged. Media personality Isabella Adediji guided proceedings with warmth and elegance, creating an environment that encouraged meaningful conversations among guests.
Published by Narrative Landscape, The Challengers captures the remarkable true story of five friends — Nonso Okpala, Adeniyi Adenubi, Mobolaji Adewumi, Gbenga Omolokun and Azubike Emodi — who, following the turbulence of the 2008 global financial crisis, joined forces to build what has become the multi-billion-naira VFD Group.
The book challenges the popular narrative of entrepreneurship being driven solely by a single visionary figure. Instead, it highlights the strength of partnership, shared values and the ability of individuals with different talents and perspectives to build enduring institutions.
Serving as Chairman of the occasion was Dr Ayodele Aderinwale, Founder and Executive Chairman of Justrite Stores, who delivered a powerful address that challenged attendees from the worlds of business, leadership and literature to embrace collaboration as a pathway to sustainable impact.
One of the evening’s most engaging highlights was a conversation featuring Chude Jideonwo, Dr Imasuen and the founders of VFD Group, where they reflected on the years of dedication, trust and strategic thinking behind the company’s growth.
Speaking about the process of bringing the story to life, Dr Imasuen revealed that the journey of writing the book required nearly five years of extensive conversations, research and effort before the founders were willing to share personal insights and open their archives.
“Convincing these individuals to tell their story was only one part of the process. Their humility humbled me and it took a while for them to come to terms with how important their achievements have been when placed in a global perspective,” he said.
Earlier, Channels Book Club host Kunle Kasumu described the book as a refreshing departure from conventional business literature, noting that it reads more like a corporate thriller filled with compelling characters, defining moments and valuable lessons on leadership, governance and institution-building.
The book also received significant recognition through the endorsement of former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, whose foreword presents The Challengers as an important contribution capable of motivating a new generation of Nigerian entrepreneurs.
A major highlight of the evening was the unveiling of The Challengers Library Endowment, an initiative designed to distribute 3,000 copies of the book to public universities and young entrepreneurs across Nigeria. The project aims to make the lessons of collaboration, entrepreneurship and long-term institution building accessible to future leaders.
As guests interacted, exchanged ideas, captured moments and received signed copies of the book, the significance of the gathering extended beyond the launch itself. The evening became a celebration of what can be achieved when individuals unite around a common vision.
The Challengers ultimately presents a powerful message: some of the most impactful success stories are not created by individuals working alone, but by people who recognise the strength of building together.
The book is available at major bookstores nationwide and online, including Amazon and Narrative Landscape’s official platform. Supporters can also participate in The Challengers Library Endowment initiative to help expand access to the book for thousands of young Nigerians.
