A former Nollywood star who successfully transitioned into military service in the United States, Grace-Charis Bassey Effah, has announced her engagement, describing the moment as a deeply personal answer to long-held prayers.

She shared the news in a Facebook post on Tuesday, where she posted photos with her fiancé. While she chose not to reveal his identity, she displayed her engagement ring and reflected emotionally on the milestone.

“Answered prayers.

“It feels like a dream, but when true love finds you, you melt.”

The announcement immediately drew a wave of congratulatory messages from fans, colleagues, and well-wishers, even though she did not disclose details about the proposal or wedding plans.

Her engagement comes at a significant point in a life already marked by dramatic transitions. More than a year ago, she left Nollywood to pursue a long-deferred ambition in the United States military, a move she has repeatedly described as fulfilling a childhood dream rooted in her upbringing in a disciplined, naval-influenced environment.

Born Belinda Effah, she gained attention in 2025 after completing boot camp with the United States Navy and later becoming a naturalised American citizen after taking the oath of allegiance. She has often credited her late father, retired naval commander Asido Bassey Effah, as a major influence in her decision to join the military.

Before her career change, she had publicly stated that acting no longer brought her fulfilment, despite early success in the Nigerian film industry. Her journey in entertainment began with the 2005 television series Shallow Waters, and she rose to wider recognition after appearing on the reality show Next Movie Star, which helped launch her Nollywood career.

Her talent earned her early industry recognition, including the Most Promising Act of the Year award at the 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards, marking her as one of the industry’s notable rising stars at the time.

In 2021, she also made headlines when she announced a name change from Belinda to Grace-Charis, attributing it to what she described as a spiritual experience that reshaped her identity and outlook on life.

Now engaged, her story continues to evolve from screen success to military service, and into a new personal chapter centered on marriage.
