Samsung Electronics has unveiled its latest generation of foldable smartphones, introducing three new Galaxy Z devices as the company moves to protect its dominance in the premium foldable segment at a time of rising production costs and intensifying competition.

The new lineup, announced at a launch event in London on Wednesday, includes the Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip8. The devices come with improved designs, enhanced artificial intelligence features and upgraded performance capabilities as Samsung seeks to attract more consumers to the foldable category.

The launch arrives as Samsung faces increasing pressure from higher memory chip prices and the possibility of a major new rival entering the foldable smartphone market. Industry analysts expect Apple to introduce its first foldable iPhone later this year, a move that could significantly reshape the sector.

Reports suggest Apple's foldable device may feature a display size similar to the iPad mini, creating a direct challenge to Samsung, which has spent years building and expanding the foldable smartphone market.

"Strategically, this is one of Samsung's most important foldable launches," said Francisco Jeronimo, Vice President at market research firm IDC.

"Samsung has to defend the category it created, and that's why it cannot play it safe."

New foldables target productivity, entertainment and everyday use
Samsung's latest Galaxy Z series is designed around three different user experiences. The Galaxy Z Fold8 focuses on productivity and immersive viewing, offering a wider display aimed at consumers who use their smartphones for streaming, multitasking and content creation.

The passport-sized Galaxy Z Fold8 is priced at $1,899 and features a larger screen area designed to improve video consumption and provide a more tablet-like experience while maintaining the portability of a smartphone.

For users seeking the highest level of performance, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, which brings premium features to the foldable category. The device is positioned as a productivity-focused smartphone, offering a larger workspace for professionals and creators who require advanced multitasking capabilities.

The Galaxy Z Flip8, meanwhile, continues Samsung's compact foldable approach with a clamshell design aimed at users who prefer portability and style. The phone offers quick access to notifications, applications and personalised features through its external display without requiring users to open the device.

Samsung increased the prices of both flagship models compared with their predecessors. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra will sell for $2,099, while the Galaxy Z Flip8 starts at $1,199, representing a $100 increase for each device.

Artificial intelligence becomes central to Samsung's foldable strategy
A major focus of the new Galaxy Z series is artificial intelligence, with all three devices powered by Alphabet's Gemini AI platform.

Samsung said it has adapted Galaxy AI features specifically for each foldable design, allowing users to complete tasks more efficiently through smarter multitasking, personalised recommendations and improved interactions.

On the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra, the larger displays provide more space for AI-assisted productivity, enabling users to work across multiple applications more seamlessly.

The Galaxy Z Flip8 introduces an AI-powered FlexWindow experience, allowing users to access important information, shortcuts and personalised suggestions directly from the external screen.

Samsung also highlighted its collaboration with AI partners, including Gemini Intelligence, while emphasising transparency, privacy protection and user control.

Speaking during the launch, TM Roh, Chief Executive Officer, President and Head of the Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics, said artificial intelligence is changing how people interact with mobile technology.

"As AI becomes more agentic, mobile devices will become the most personal entry point to experiences that understand and adapt to each user," said TM Roh, Chief Executive Officer, President and Head of the Device eXperience (DX) Division at Samsung Electronics.
"By setting a new standard for foldables, we are once again advancing the premium mobile experience and opening the next era of intelligence to more people."
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8 open a new chapter in foldables with three distinct experiences designed for Ultra productivity, immersive discovery and self-expression.
Rising component costs create pressure on smartphone makers
Although Samsung's semiconductor business is benefiting from higher memory chip prices, the company's mobile division is facing pressure from increased manufacturing expenses.

Some analysts expect Samsung's mobile business to record its first-ever quarterly loss for the April-to-June period as rising component costs reduce profit margins.

Memory and storage components now represent a significant portion of smartphone production costs. According to Omdia Senior Analyst Sheng Win Chow, memory and storage account for more than 60 per cent of the material costs of budget smartphones and more than 30 per cent of premium devices.

However, premium smartphones have greater pricing flexibility because memory costs make up a smaller proportion of their overall production expenses.
"Memory is a much smaller share of the bill of materials on a device above $1,500 than on a mid-range phone, so there is more room to absorb (higher chip prices) at the top-end," said Sheng Win Chow. "The harder question is what justifies the price. A bigger screen alone is no longer enough," he added.
Samsung aims to maintain foldable leadership
Despite broader challenges facing the smartphone industry, analysts expect the foldable segment to continue expanding.

IDC forecasts that global foldable smartphone shipments will grow by 20 per cent this year, even as the overall smartphone market faces pressure from supply constraints and rising costs.

The research firm also expects Samsung to increase its share of the global smartphone market in 2026, supported by its strong position in premium devices and continued investment in foldable technology.

The latest Galaxy Z smartphones are powered by Qualcomm's newest flagship processor, while the Galaxy Z Flip8 will use either a Qualcomm chipset or Samsung's own Exynos processor depending on the market.

With the Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip8, Samsung is reinforcing its strategy of combining premium hardware, artificial intelligence and innovative designs to remain at the forefront of the foldable smartphone industry.
As competition grows and new players prepare to enter the market, Samsung's latest launch represents a major effort to defend the category it helped create while pushing foldable technology into a broader era of AI-powered mobile experiences.

Designed specifically for foldable devices, the new Galaxy AI experience is smarter, more personal, and capable of helping users complete everyday tasks with less effort.

Galaxy AI Becomes More Personal
The latest Galaxy Z series introduces a new generation of AI features that work seamlessly across more apps and services. Samsung says the goal is to make AI a proactive companion that understands users’ routines, interests, and daily habits while helping them take action faster.
One of the standout additions is Now Brief, which delivers personalized updates based on a user’s schedule, preferences, and daily activities. It also includes security and privacy insights, helping users stay informed about potential risks and recommended actions.

Another new feature, Now Nudge, turns conversations into actions. For example, if users discuss meeting someone, the AI can suggest checking their calendar, searching for a location, or saving directions. On Galaxy foldables, these suggestions can appear alongside conversations on the larger display, making multitasking more convenient.

Gemini AI Gets More Powerful
Samsung has expanded its collaboration with Google by integrating more advanced Gemini AI capabilities into the new foldables.

Users can simply describe what they need—or even provide screenshots or images—and Gemini can complete tasks across more than 40 supported apps and services. These include finding event tickets, searching for nearby restaurants, making reservations, and much more.

Samsung also introduced Gemini Notebook, a centralized workspace where users can organize notes, voice recordings, documents, images, and files. Thanks to drag-and-drop support in Split View, creating reports, meeting summaries, visual presentations, audio overviews, and infographics becomes faster and more intuitive.

Galaxy AI also works more closely with connected devices like the Galaxy Watch Ultra2, Galaxy Watch9, and Samsung’s upcoming smart eyewear, offering personalized wellness insights and connected experiences across multiple devices.

Security and Privacy Take Center Stage
As AI becomes increasingly involved in everyday tasks, Samsung is placing greater emphasis on protecting user privacy.

The new Galaxy Z series continues to rely on Samsung Knox, the company’s multi-layered security platform, which safeguards personal information from the hardware level upward. Sensitive AI data is protected using the Personal Data Engine (PDE), Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection (KEEP), and Knox Vault, which together create secure, encrypted environments for personal information.

Users also gain more visibility into how AI operates through One UI 9’s new AI Assistant Activity Dashboard. This feature provides a centralized view of AI actions and automations, making it easier to understand what AI has done and adjust settings if needed.

Samsung has also introduced proactive Privacy Alerts that notify users when apps attempt unnecessary background access, helping prevent potential privacy risks before they become serious.
These improvements complement existing security features such as Auto Blocker, Theft Protection, Private Sharing, and Secure Wi-Fi, giving users greater transparency and control over their data.

To enhance the AI experience, Samsung is including a six-month free trial of Google AI Pro with every new Galaxy Z device. The subscription includes access to Google’s most advanced AI models and 5TB of cloud storage.

Moving to a Galaxy device has also become easier. The updated Smart Switch now allows iPhone users to transfer data wirelessly by simply scanning a QR code, without downloading additional apps. Passwords, passkeys, eSIM information, accessibility settings, and call history can also be transferred.

Samsung has also improved Quick Share by adding compatibility with AirDrop, allowing easier file sharing between Galaxy and iPhone users.
