Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has revealed how a firm warning from her husband, fellow actor Kolawole Ajeyemi, prompted her to quit smoking cigarettes after they started a family together.
The award-winning actress made the disclosure during an appearance on The Morayo Show, where she spoke candidly about her marriage, motherhood and the personal changes she has made over the years.
Abraham described Ajeyemi as one of the greatest blessings in her life, saying he has always supported her individuality while also encouraging her to make decisions that strengthen their family.
“Kolawole Ajeyemi is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. He lets me be me. I used to smoke cigarettes. I still smoke vape once in a while. But I stopped smoking cigarettes,” she said.
She recalled that the conversation about smoking began while she was pregnant, when her husband advised her that the habit was no longer appropriate as they prepared to welcome their child.
“My husband told me something when I got pregnant that, ‘You know you can no longer smoke.’”
According to the actress, the issue became even more significant after the birth of their child. She recounted an outing during which Ajeyemi saw her smoking but chose not to confront her immediately.
Instead, he later had a serious conversation with her that ultimately changed her perspective.
“When I gave birth, we went out, and he saw me smoking; he did not say anything,” she said.
“But he told me that he did not say I should not smoke cigarettes, but he must not see the butt with his child.”
“He warned that anytime he sees such, that would be the end of the marriage.”
Abraham said the warning had a lasting impact on her and became the turning point that led her to stop smoking cigarettes, although she admitted that she occasionally uses a vape.
The actress, who married Ajeyemi in 2019 and welcomed their first child later that year, also spoke about the trust and understanding that define their relationship, particularly regarding the demands of her acting career.
Addressing questions about romantic scenes in films, Abraham said her husband understands the nature of her profession and does not allow it to become a source of conflict in their marriage.
“About kissing in movies, my husband is mature. He is not a boy. He is a man,” she said.
She added that many of her colleagues' spouses are equally comfortable working with her because of the boundaries she has set for herself.
“Most of my colleagues’ wives are comfortable with me. I can do every other thing. But promiscuity is not one of them.”
“God has blessed me with a platform now; I do not have to kiss anybody like years past.”
Abraham said her marriage has provided her with stability, support and the freedom to thrive both personally and professionally, while also helping her make healthier choices as a wife and mother.
Her remarks offer a glimpse into the balance between family life and a demanding career in the entertainment industry, highlighting how personal relationships can influence lifestyle decisions and shape priorities beyond the spotlight.
