According to renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the former Manchester City and Bayern Munich defender has reached an agreement to take up the role at Trabzonspor, marking a new chapter in a career that brought him major domestic and international honours.
Boateng's move into coaching comes shortly after he announced his retirement from professional football on September 19, 2025, at the age of 37. After spending years at the highest level of European football, the former centre-back will now begin his transition from the pitch to the technical area.
The 38-year-old enjoyed the most successful period of his playing career at Bayern Munich, where he established himself as an important member of one of Europe's most successful teams.
During his time with the German giants, Boateng won nine German league titles, two UEFA Champions League trophies and five DFB-Pokal titles. His Bayern career also included several memorable domestic and European campaigns as the club maintained its dominance in German football.
On the international stage, Boateng was part of the Germany squad that lifted the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The defender played a key role during the tournament, featuring as Germany defeated Argentina in the final to claim the country's fourth World Cup title.
Boateng began his professional career with Hertha BSC before moving to Hamburger SV. His performances subsequently earned him a move to Manchester City, where he spent the 2010-11 season before returning to Germany to join Bayern Munich.
After leaving Bayern, Boateng continued his career in Europe with Olympique Lyon, before later representing Italian side US Salernitana and Austrian club LASK.
His retirement brought an end to a playing career that spanned more than a decade at the highest level. His decision to move into coaching now gives the former defender an opportunity to draw on his extensive experience of working under some of the game's leading coaches.
At Trabzonspor, Boateng will begin his coaching journey as part of the club's technical setup, taking his first professional role on the other side of the touchline.
The appointment represents a new phase for the former Germany star, who moves from being a decorated defender to a member of a coaching staff after years of competing for major honours in Germany, England, France, Italy and Austria.
