The new service is expected to allow passengers to stream videos, browse websites, exchange messages, play online games and use data-intensive cloud services while in the air, marking a significant upgrade from conventional aircraft Wi-Fi systems.
The initial deployment will focus on aircraft operating through Seoul Incheon International Airport, South Korea’s principal international aviation hub. The airlines plan to expand the technology to additional aircraft as they progress with the integration of their fleets.
Korean Air will initially install Starlink on four aircraft—three Airbus A350-900s and one Boeing 777-300ER. Asiana Airlines, meanwhile, will equip nine A350-900s and one A330-300 with the satellite-based connectivity system.
That will bring the initial rollout to 14 aircraft across the two airlines.
The equipped aircraft are expected to operate mainly on medium- and long-haul routes connecting South Korea with destinations in the Americas, Europe and Southeast Asia. However, some may also be deployed on shorter routes, giving passengers on selected flights access to the new service.
The move places Korean Air and Asiana among an expanding list of international airlines adopting Starlink to improve passenger connectivity.
Free Internet Across All Cabins
Unlike many existing airline Wi-Fi systems, passengers will not be required to purchase a separate internet package or create a dedicated account before going online.
After switching their devices to airplane mode, passengers can connect to the Korean Air Wi-Fi or Asiana Airlines Wi-Fi network and enter the name and seat number displayed on their boarding pass.
A brief advertisement will then complete the connection process.
The service will be available across all cabin classes, meaning passengers will not need to pay a premium based on whether they are travelling in economy, business or first class.
The airlines expect the improved connectivity to support a wider range of online activities, including video streaming, web browsing, messaging, online gaming and cloud-based work and collaboration platforms.
The move could also make internet access a more routine part of the flying experience, particularly on longer international journeys where passengers increasingly expect to remain connected throughout their trip.
Expansion Planned Through 2027
Korean Air plans to extend Starlink connectivity to most of its fleet by the end of 2027, with the broader programme linked to its integration with Asiana Airlines.
The integration is expected to be formally completed on December 17, according to Korea JoongAng Daily.
The planned expansion means the initial 14 aircraft will serve as the starting point for a much larger fleetwide connectivity programme, potentially making high-speed internet increasingly commonplace across the combined airline operation.
Despite the improved internet speeds, however, some forms of online communication will remain prohibited.
Passengers will not be allowed to make voice or video calls or conduct live social media broadcasts while airborne. The restrictions are intended to address cabin safety, security and passenger-comfort concerns.
The airlines may also block websites deemed insecure or illegal.
The restrictions are expected to leave passengers with access to the main services needed for communication, entertainment and work while maintaining standards for the shared cabin environment.
The Starlink deployment represents a major shift in the approach to in-flight connectivity by Korean Air and Asiana. With the first 14 aircraft entering service and a broader installation programme extending through 2027, passengers are expected to see faster and more accessible internet become a standard feature on an increasing number of flights operated by the two carriers.
