The 31-year-old made his position clear during an appearance on El Chiringuito, where he singled out Yamal from a star-studded list of contenders competing for the prize.
“Lamine should win the Ballon d’Or,” Keita said. “I think he is the player today who, for me globally and individually, has the highest chances of taking home the Ballon d’Or.”
Keita also pointed to Yamal’s influence beyond his performances on the pitch, highlighting the teenager’s ability to inspire young footballers while competing at the highest level.
“I think it would be fair, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all because of how he plays football, how he inspires people and kids at his age.”
Yamal, 19, was included among the 30 players shortlisted for this year’s Ballon d’Or after another prominent campaign for club and country.
His case has been strengthened by his role in Spain’s 2026 FIFA World Cup triumph, placing him among a group of elite players vying for the individual honour.
The Barcelona winger faces competition from some of the biggest names in world football, including Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane and Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe.
The Ballon d’Or race has consequently attracted significant attention, with Yamal’s emergence adding another dimension to a prize traditionally dominated by established superstars.
For Keita, however, the teenager’s age does not diminish his claim. Instead, the Monza forward believes Yamal’s performances and influence make him a deserving candidate for the award.
The winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or is expected to be announced later this month at a ceremony in London, where the leading contenders will discover who has been voted the world’s outstanding player.
