Nene Aderibigbe, mother of Nigerian singer Ayra Starr, has expressed concern over the growing influence of social media on Generation Z, saying many young people are increasingly losing their ability to think independently.

Aderibigbe criticised the younger generation's heavy reliance on smartphones and other people's opinions, arguing that the trend has made it difficult for some to recognise and develop their individual talents.

Speaking on the issue, she blamed social media for changing the way young people think and make decisions.

“Social media has just turned a lot of things upside down. They don’t have their own thinking again; it is only people’s thinking they use now,” she said.

She further noted that although many young people possess remarkable talents and abilities, some struggle to identify their potential because of the pressure and influence of social media.

Offering advice, Aderibigbe urged members of Gen Z to deliberately create time away from their phones to reflect on their personal lives, discover themselves and develop independent thinking.

She recommended spending at least two to three hours away from digital devices, using the time for personal reflection and meditation.

“Take your time, drop your phone down for two, three hours, do mental note, put your head down, take a mental note or meditate,” she advised.

Her comments have drawn attention to ongoing conversations about social media dependence, self-discovery and the impact of digital culture on young people's personal development.
