The National Sports Commission (NSC), which confirmed the development in a statement, said the payments, estimated at about N140 million per player, had commenced, marking the fulfilment of the President’s pledge to reward the players for their continental triumph.
Tinubu had announced the financial reward after the Nigerian women’s national team clinched a record-extending 10th WAFCON title in July 2025, defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final.
The Super Falcons staged a remarkable comeback after falling two goals behind in the encounter, scoring three times in the second half to reclaim the African championship and maintain their status as the continent’s most successful women’s football team.
Captain of the team, Rasheedat Ajibade, expressed appreciation to the President for honouring his commitment, describing the payment as an important recognition of the players’ efforts and achievement.
The latest disbursement follows a similar reward extended to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, after their victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, where they secured an unprecedented fifth consecutive continental title.
According to the NSC, the rewards reflect the Federal Government’s commitment to recognising sporting excellence and encouraging Nigerian athletes to pursue greater achievements at international competitions.
The commission, under the leadership of its Chairman, Shehu Dikko, and Director-General, Bukola Olopade, has continued to highlight athlete welfare, international exposure and the hosting of major sporting competitions as key priorities in its sports administration agenda.
It disclosed that Nigeria had hosted about 30 international sporting competitions under its watch, a development it said had helped strengthen the country's reputation as a destination for major sporting events.
The NSC also commended Tinubu for supporting national teams and fulfilling financial commitments to athletes, noting that rewarding outstanding performances could boost confidence among sportsmen and women, encourage excellence and reinforce national pride.
