Nollywood actor and filmmaker Kunle Afod has sparked conversations about the challenges of balancing acting careers with family life, claiming that many actors are more devoted to their profession than their spouses.

The actor made the remarks during an interview with Kasnasty Sugar on YouTube on Thursday, where he discussed the demands of the entertainment industry, his dedication to acting and his separation from his wife, Desola Afod.

Afod maintained that his passion for filmmaking and acting was so strong that he would not sacrifice his career for any relationship, insisting that his commitment to the profession had shaped major decisions in his personal life.

“I was born for this and I will die for it,” he declared.

Explaining why some actors struggle to maintain relationships, he said their partners sometimes regard their passion for the profession as competition for their attention and affection.

“What we actors love most is our work not our wife. We love the job we do more than anything else. If you're a creative person, you will love art more than any other thing,” he said.

He added, “That's why it's not easy for our partners to cope because they see art as their rival. It's only when you don't love acting that you will consider leaving it for your wife or husband but if you truly love the job, you will prefer to let go of anybody for it.”

The filmmaker also disclosed that his demanding work schedule sometimes keeps him away from his family for extended periods, revealing that there are occasions when he goes several months without speaking to his children.

“Sometimes I don't call my kids in six months. Nobody can hinder me. I was born for this and I will die for it,” he said.

Afod further revealed that he had turned down several opportunities to relocate abroad because of his determination to continue pursuing his acting career in Nigeria.

“I had the opportunity to relocate abroad so many years ago but I didn't embrace it because of this same job,” he added.

Speaks on separation from wife

The actor also addressed his separation from Desola Afod, popularly known as Celeb Wife, months after reports of their marital crisis circulated on social media.

The development reportedly became public in February 2026 after Desola was said to have moved her belongings out of their matrimonial home.

Although neither party had publicly provided detailed explanations at the time, Afod was asked during the interview about the circumstances surrounding their separation.

In his response, he pointed to the demands of his career, jealousy and allegations of infidelity as issues that could create tension between couples.

“Separation from my wife? This job is heavy to the extent that we sometimes don't have time for our home,” he said.

He also made controversial remarks about trust, relationships and sexual expectations between couples, suggesting that suspicion and perceived double standards could contribute to marital disagreements.

Addressing women during the interview, he said, “To all the women here, my apologies please. I need to beg you guys first before I talk about my separation.”

He subsequently questioned the different standards some couples allegedly apply to sexual behaviour and fidelity, using sex toys as an example.

“It's easy for a woman to convince her husband to buy her dildo, she will tell you that she doesn't want to cheat on you. She would buy up to three dildos,” he said.

He further questioned why a woman who uses sex toys might react negatively if she discovers that her husband also uses them.

Afod's comments have brought renewed attention to his marital separation and the difficulties of balancing the demands of an entertainment career with family responsibilities.
